March 30 - Report Cards

April 1 - Harlem Wizards' Assembly

April 3 - Social Studies test on Anasazi Lessons 2 & 3

We are closing in on the end of our read aloud, The BFG, by Roald Dahl. The nine giants have been captured and each of them are being flown to England hoisted up to a helicopter. What will happen upon their arrival? What will become of the BFG and Orpan Sophie? Stay tuned to find out. The students are on the edge of their seats!

ACADEMICS

READING

Our story this week is The Many Lives of Benjamin Franklin. We will learn about the many great accomplishments of this famous American statesman. Skills we will be working on include: main idea, following directions, judgments and decisions, and root words.

MATH

We have finished studying line plots and took a quiz late last week. We are moving on to line graphs, which will wrap up the chapter.

ENGLISH

Next up on our plate will be irregular verbs. This past week we had lots of practice distinguishing between linking, helping and action verbs. It was a little confusing at times but we worked our way through it.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Our study of the Anasazi and Mesa Verde continues. We are learning how they used natural resources from the yucca plant to turkey feathers! This week, we will be watching a Unitedstreaming video about their daily lives. There will be a test on Friday, April 3rd, on Lessons 2 & 3.

REMINDERS

  • Our multiplication fact challenge is in full swing! Your child should be bringing home his/ her flashcards daily and practicing them. A parent signature is required once a week in the homework notebook, to track your child's progress.

  • Your child should also be studying his/her spelling and vocabulary words weekly, as well as reading his/her reading story for the week, and returning a signed homework slip.

ACADEMICS

READING:

There will be no reading story this week because of PSSA testing. During test breaks, the students will be enjoying silent, free reading. Our regular reading schedule will resume next week.

MATH:

We will begin our multiplication fact challenge this week. This will follow the same format as our addition, and subtraction fact challenge. Your child will be bringing home 2's flashcards to practice on Monday.

ENGLISH:

As time permits this week, we will continue our study of main, helping, and linking verbs.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We will continue with our chapter on the Anasazi, a Native American community once located at Mesa Verde.

WHAT'S NEW?

  • We are two thirds of the way through our read aloud, The BFG, by Roald Dahl, and the children are hooked! Each chapter leaves the children on the edge of their seats!
Orphan Sophie was snatched from her bed by the BFG and taken far away to Giant Country. She and the BFG are becoming fast friends, and are now trying to save the children of London from the giants that are not so nice!
Will their plan work? Stay tuned to find out! I highly recommend this book as a read aloud. It is one of the children's favorites!
  • We wrapped up our story on blue whales with a crayon-resist watercolor art project. Each student came up with a different fact about these amazing creatures, for a whopping total of twenty! Look for our display which will soon be in the reading room hallway. I will be adding pictures to our blog as well!

PSSA

On Monday, March 16th, we will begin our week of PSSA testing.

We have been working VERY hard this entire school year to prepare for these tests! I am so proud of all of the students' efforts!

For maximum brain power, I encourage all parents to be sure that their child gets plenty of sleep each night, and eats a good breakfast each morning.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS!

We celebrated Theodor Seuss Geisel's (aka Dr. Seuss') birthday in style with a variety of Seuss activities.

I read his first published book to the class, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. The children then had to draw something that they saw that morning on the way to school. Our display is in the hall right outside our classroom, entitled, And to Think That I Saw It on Huston Ave! Quite a variety of sights!

The students read their choice of a Dr. Seuss book and got to make their own "Cat in the Hat".
To the Dr. Seuss displays in our classroom, we added a write-up of their favorite Dr. Seuss story, along with adjectives to describe his books.

We had three guest readers on Dr. Seuss Day, and a big thank you goes out to Mrs. Hurrelbrink, Mrs. Kurtzhals, and Mr. Rhoads. The books they read were enjoyed by all!

The day culminated with a Dr. Seuss school-wide assembly, with every grade sharing a Dr. Seuss song or book...and to top it all off a special appearance by the Cat in the Hat himself!
